Throughout my life I was denied things, for reasons out of my hand really! And you thought Qataris didn’t have their share of trouble? Think again..

This is not going to turn into a drama blog entry, but in case you are moved by any of it please donate me money *large sums 6 figure like, in a currency that is worth something.

So there I was a bit tired, I crashed the first chair starring at nothing, and I started hearing this voice in my brain that went like:

Wait what the hell? How did you get yourself into this discussion? And I heard myself talking to someone about my tribe and our origin! I mean 5: 00 PM what was I thinking? I was that tired, I guess I was not thinking after all.

So this guy who will be referred to from now as: GBHH –God Bless His Heart- was like:

GBHH: But you guys are not from there!

Me:    wait, what? I thought we are talking about here!

GBHH: Oh no, forget about here. We are talking about there.. You guys are not even from there!  Placing my roots even farther than those who have claimed it has been.

I chuckled, placing my hands on his shoulder “ I worry, that GBHH Jr. will convince my kids that they are not even earthlings, would he deny them humanity to feel a bit more special?”

===

On the same day, I receive this invitation to a forum where a country feels like it wants to clarify couple of bombs being thrown somewhere in the middle east and couple of thousand lives nothing serious really (it happens you see!)

So, it went like this:

Excited lady: bring about any confusion in your head we shall explain what really happened.

Startled me: yeah.. I would like to show up and listen.

Excited lady: It’s not a lecture.  Please ask, let us clear all the doubts, all the misconceptions all these little evil thoughts that might grow into something wanted globally!

Confused me: wait I am not asking to speak, or be heard! I am asking to listen, that comes at no cost, right? you cannot deny this right, no one even thought of denying: the right to listen! People love to talk that’s why the thought never crossed their minds!

But you know what?  Prepare yourselves, prepare your kids, your logic and reason to be stripped of everything that you took for granted to be given. Personally, I am all in for it, I think it makes our planet look sexy.

So to GBHH and the excited lady; thank you.. I will continue to prove you wrong by what I do not by what I say. Watch me..

Tell me the moon is made of cheese and there is a chance I might believe you. Tell me the moon is made of cheese and you got a little taste while doing your extensive research and I’d probably believe you. After all, you objectively tested a hypothesis, right? Almost…

I can still remember the day when I had a can of black miniature model paint and decided to “personalize” one of my room’s electric sockets. It was fun at that time, but a few days later I started to regret what I had done.

When I come to think about it, my attempt at “Home Improvement” was probably driven by the desire to make my room look better. The result was less satisfactory than I was hoping for, but it stayed like that, perhaps as a reminder to myself to think things over before attempting to change something.

I had a feeling that I ruined something precious, and looking back, I probably overlooked the fact that these sockets are very likely to have been produced at a rate even faster than the time it took me to destroy one (aesthetically, at least).

What would be more agonizing, though, is the destruction of something that has taken a long time to produce. It would become more of a predicament if this thing was unique, or had been produced by a collaboration of efforts and was irrecoverable.

Are we all supposed to be braver and accept whatever changes we cause by our own hands and take responsibility for them? What if our decisions are going to affect others who have neither the intention nor desire to participate in such a gamble? All I know, is that the socket in my old room is still black.

When: about 5 years ago

Where: college apartment building, 3rd floor

What: third floor student occupants meet & greet. Icebreaking game: Never Have I Ever

Snacks: cookies of course & chocolate cake iced with yummy juicy chocolate topping and other stuff, anyways.. that’s not the point

“Never have I ever seen Superman” a deeply thought-through statement that I threw out there merely to win the game being extremely confidant every American kid in that circle has seen the movie, show or comic book. Needless to say, I won!

Thinking about it these days, I’d never use this trick again. I have met Superman in person. Many of them actually, hats off, the title is well deserved. Superman is anyone “faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” This tale characteristic is inclusive of anyone with fictional superpower and an ability to fix every problem with one solution; using one kind of power.

***

Dear Superman

One solution is not enough. If it worked elsewhere in the world, there is a good chance it won’t work today, especially here. I totally understand, if you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail, wallah I understand. Can you use intellectual power to think beyond your one and only solution? That’s all I’m asking for. Put it in context of the place, time and customs. I’m afraid with your blue, red & yellow costume, you flew allover the world and lost the ability to customize solutions beyond your power. Piece of advice, listen to your rescuees, observe them so that you don’t end up rescuing one person today and damaging the future of many more.

Thank you for not listening

***

So about real-life Supermen, look for them around

When: yesterday, today and tomorrow.. Until a country runs out of money

Where: around wealthy nations

What: consultants flying in and out

Snacks: your money

Every now and then, I run across people from faraway lands, who are a bit inquisitive. They mean no harm at all, and bless’em their just curious. And there is nothing wrong with that! Except for some questions…such as the ones I have written down, and I didn’t come up with any, all of these are real questions asked by real people and yes those of you who know me, can guarantee that the answers were real too! So here goes:

1-      You must have had alcohol while being in the states, right?

Answer: Yeah and I used to sell drugs and I also had a thing for what’s her name? Look how about you and me in a fine Italian restaurant, say the Ritz? We can do more of that socializing?  Don’t forget the Roses sweetie!

2-      How did you meet your wife?

Answer: We were both auditioning for “so you think you can dance” look as boring as this may sound to you it was just as any Abdullah gets to be introduced to any Aisha out there.

3-      You do know why Allah has prohibited pork don’t you?

Answer:  unless you are a fridge salesperson please stop telling me about the fact that it’s because of Germs and bacteria. Unlike you I never had a divine revelation so I don’t second guess God’s commandment I just follow and get the reward. Much like Boss employee thing, How come you don’t second guess that Monthly report?

4-      Are all Qataris like you?

Answer: yes, and they are all of about the same height and incidentally their names are Raed too!

5-      Why Japanese of all languages?

Answer: I thought it was Chinese!

6-      You must work out right? While nearly holding a measuring tape to size my muscle.

Answer: No, I prayed and cried so hard at the altar and hallelujah!

7-      Wait… You guys, i.e. Muslims, have alters?

Answer: Can you please wait for a minute until I find something to hit you with?

8-      How many wives does your father have?

Answer:  Oh my… We did a census last year but that’s out of date. Let me make a note of this: Must count my dads’ wives sometime soon!

9-      Don’t you think women should drive in Saudi Arabia?

Answer:  Please look at me, look at me carefully I am a young healthy QATARI MALE.. MALE DAMN it. How come everyone is asked about this except for Saudi women?

10-   What do you do when you are in Mecca?

Answer: Celebrate good times, come on! It’s a celebration.. (by Kool & the Gang)

I really enjoy these questions, so keep’em coming people.

Mohammed and following one’s dream. I am not talking about Mohammed the prophet – Peace Be Upon Him – who once promised a bounty hunter whilst being a fugitive to hand in King of Persia’s’ bracelets. Talk about a mission that was fulfilled and a vision that was lived!

I am also not talking about Mohammed al-Razi; a celebrated scholar known to be a chemist, an alchemist, a physicist and a polymath. Nor am I talking about Mohammed Igbal, a poet whose poems spread throughout the Indian subcontinent and sang for hundred times by great men such as Gandhi.

Those who enjoy fine music might be under the impression that I am writing about Mohammed Abd el Wahab, a famous Egyptian composer, whose tunes still play to remind us that music soothes the beast within. And do forgive my words that may have led you to think that I’ve meant Mohammed Ali; “Sportsman of the Century” Oh no I am not talking about any of these mohammeds.

The Mohammed I meant is none other than my friend, a 19 year old Qatari kid, who walked with me through the alleys of the Exhibition center on fine a day that I will always remember. On a day that I have decided to write about, to you..

yes, You .. the reader,

yes You.. Tomorrow’s leader.

“Mohammed sit down and tell me what is it that you enjoy?” I asked.

“I enjoy languages, yes helping those in need and being around kids too” he replied.

I looked around and “Well, there are no circuses here! So you are not becoming a clown today” I sarcastically said.

“Wait a minute..How about working at a hospital?”I asked again. It seemed like fate that we stood in front of a medical institute’s booth.

“You know Raed, I have always wanted to become a nurse, quiet uncommon I know, but to relief a pain and transform a sad face to happy one is what I always wanted” he revealed to me with somewhat a worry face that I would think that this is not manly enough. “

Well, a nurse you shall be then.” I smiled as I walked towards the booth. “Excuse us” I have looked around, happy that I will make a change in one’s life. “Someone’s dream will come true today, oh hurray!” Silly me to have ever thought that. There, from his throne he descended, and from his fine chair he departed to acknowledge our existence. The official in a white thobe, our countryman yes our angel and our hope.

“Allow me to introduce to you our sponsoring package and what a fine package it is.” He boastfully said.

A lucrative offer he made, one that Mohammed opened his jaws at and one that made me think, “perhaps it’s not too late to throw away years of engineering and pursue a medical career myself.”

“Pardon my naivety; can this young man enroll in your program?” I pointed at Mohammed.

“Well sure he can, have you taken the TOFEL?”

“Yes, sir and I did pass.” Mohammed replied with joy, it’s a step towards his dream.

“And, are you married?” “No…Not yet” to which I have interrupted “is that bad? I mean if you guys need only married people, we will get this young man married in no time!” The Hr personnel laughed, and we all did. It was a good atmosphere!

He went on and told us that it’s not a problem at all. “GREAT.. a step closer” I thought to myself. But I was thrown miles away by the following statement:”well then all he needs to do, is get us an admission letter of any of the universities listed by the Supreme Council of Education”

“Pardon me again, Mohammed has the TOFEL, he has all the papers you ask of him”

“Good for him, all he needs to do now is apply.”

“Mohammed, you go ahead and apply and once you get accepted I will personally guarantee your scholarship.”

“How am I to go about it?” Mohammed asked and was puzzled as I was.

“But he was not trained on how to write that essay, he does not how to apply!” My frustration grew at my fellow countryman. “YOU, of all people should know! Were you trained to apply to a western university? Is that why you fail to see?”

“I am offering thousands, future and better prospect and all I ask in return is an admission letter from a university”

“Kieta.. “ (Disappeared in Japanese) I heard Mohammed whisper with a smile, my giant friend whose eyes dazzled with hope a minute ago.

“You wait for a minute.” I commanded Mohammed in an irritated manner, and looked at my fellow countryman who handed out his business card in a “you have a good one, now leave” gesture .This person whose body was a punch away and whose mindset was far lost in dark ages. “Wait… Wait, how is it that you are taking any risk? And how much can this whole process cost your organization? Please don’t kill his dream. Give him a chance, you should… “I started rambling trying to hold on to any string of hope. “

Can we go, this is embarrassing” Mohammed looked at me with piercing eyes, and now that I remember this looked like a classical

“But even the dogs eat scraps that fall from their masters’ tables.” Scene. Unfortunately, the person whom we have ask these crumbs of hope was not as generous and never will be.

“It is your right to be given a chance, it isn’t a charity bestowed.” I angrily answered without missing a beat.

“close yet so far “he answered and that was how it ended as we faded away.

On that day I have learned how hopes can be crushed, how dreams can be destroyed and how spirits can be killed. And when thousands of Mohammeds lived to see their dreams come true, my friend Mohammed didn’t even get the chance to.

I am selfish, I have to admit for I thought of my unborn kids should they ever fall ill I just wanted the likes of Mohammed to look after them. Because I know they will look after them passionately and not as a mean to get their next paycheck. I do apologize, as I would like to come clean.

And to those of you who wonder what ever has become of my friend?

Well Mohammed now is an operator at a reputable petrochemical organization, where he has become part of a percentage that can impress officials and attract yet another citizen whose dreams were never meant to be.

Viva Qatarization!

I want to capitalize on talents that I was blessed with : learning, speech and writing.

Within me I want peace, sense of content and transparency in public and in private.

With my Family I want to create a happy, secure shelter both financially and emotionally. In me they will find refuge and legacy I shall give to spare throughout times. That is my gift.

Professionally  I lead by example, and leave with a smile. My work will only add value and my contributions are to be noticed by all team members.

In My community I will add to the development of people and infrastructure. My works will be marked with Passion and signed with sincerity.

And to the world, I will send a message of who we are as a nation with literature that brings joy to their hearts.

Hardships can only engrave this deeper in my acts, obstacles can only strengthen my resolve.

When all is said and done; I will leave this world but my Works will stand witness to remind history that there existed someone by the name of Raed.

Dear BMW’s head of quality,
I congratulate you for manufacturing one of the world’s best cars while having one of the most miserable services and treatment to your customers. Shocked? Perhaps not as I was while I was starring at the “quality award of the year” given by your group to Qatar’s local agent.

At Alfardan’s workshop, I entrusted my X5 over the span of 10 colander days to fix a mere rear light fault and a Problem with the A/C. However, and to my shock I discovered after 10 days and as I wanted to leave that there exists yet another problem! Miraculously the front kidney grill has a “fitting problem!”

I use the term “miraculous” since no formal explanation was offered to justify what seemed to be caused by an accident! Sitting for extensive hours, I thought of few questions that I would like to ask you:

- Why wasn’t this reported to me “the owner” formally?

- How did this car make it through all the quality checks to the point of returning it to the client with a major defect that was not there when I entrusted the car to Alfardan’s group?

- If this has happened during the 10 days, what efforts were made to meet the deadline of receiving my car on the agreed date?

To be fair workshop and the existing staff, the workshop manager Mr. Nick has apologized and offered me “a solution to go about my life with little inconvenience.” What I did not understand at the time was that the word “little” referred to a “mini” cooper.

Over the span of 4 days, I have kept waiting for a word of apology or an explanation, but I received none. I did receive my car however, which also had to return to the workshop the very next day because of a “low tire pressure fault” this painful exercise lasted for a whole afternoon.

Bear in mind that the saga was witnessed by Mr. Chris, the after-sales General Manager, and the conversation with Mr. Nick took place in Mr. Chris’s office. Mr. Chris who hangs a leadership model high on his wall has refused to meet, talk or even shake my hand followed by a word of apology.

I wonder what leader fails to accept accountability and runs away from responsibility?

Lastly, I fail to understand why BMWs’ standards drop dramatically as they sell their cars away from places like the U.S. or EU? BMW promotes cars with words like “experience” and “sheer pleasure” yet the only experience I am getting is: “shear painful experience” and that is how you lose customers loyalty

Step 2 in building your personal mission statement is finding out what roles you play in your daily life? Once you have, then you identify the key people concerned with this role and clarify with few statements what you want to do.

Dr. Covey lists 6 roles for you to list down and I will share one along the  clarifying statement

Role: Employee

Key People related to this Role: Employer, Colleagues, clients

Clarifying statement:

contribute with value added work

Build teams, support colleagues

ensure client’s satisfaction.

Be spotted for my positive attitude

Ladies you could include a role of being a mother, wife, daughter think hard you will find many roles even when you are a household. Guys, being a hunk is a status it’s not a role so spare me already.

Happy new year everyone, I wish you a great year and please stop thinking that the world is coming to an end in 2012 unless you decide on giving all your money away then please hesitate not and send me an e-mail.

Well, let’s get to the point of this blog entry: I have adopted Steven R. Covey’s concept of 7 habits of highly effective people for the past 3 years, and to a certain degree it enabled me to achieve many goals. So this year, yours truly decided on sharing with you the steps of how it goes.

First: Values.

I will start with the values I set for myself for this year and I hope some of you see this as a useful guideline in building their own system.

1.       Professionalism.

·         I do excellent work every day regardless of circumstances.

·         I am open to ideas of others.

·         I have a positive attitude.

·         I am a team player.

·         I conduct myself in a world class manner.

2.       Spirituality.

·         I set an example of what a Muslim is.

·         I gossip not.

·         I keep God in mind throughout my acts.

·         I train myself to reach peace within.

3.       Education.

·         I learn daily, and practice that which I have learned.

·         I am a dedicated student.

·         I appreciate experts in their fields.

·         I seek knowledge with all my will.

4.       modesty.

·         I never think high of myself.

·         I accept positive criticism.

·         I put myself in others’ shoes.

·         I always compare myself to those who are greater and learn from them.

5.       Kindness.

·         I think of those who are less fortunate.

·         I help those in need, I focus on efforts and trust fate with results.

·         I treat others in a way where I am patient with shortcomings.

6.       Truth.

·         I seek truth in everything I say and do.

·         I search for accurate information.

·         I accept the outcome of truth.

·         I lie not.

7.       Firmness.

·         I am objective.

·         I go by facts and figures.

·         I do not compromise the standards I live by.

8.       Beauty.

·         I recognize beauty in all situations.

·         I appreciate taste and class in almost everything.

·         I believe in a prettier future for myself, my family and my nation.

9.       Humor.

·         I draw smiles on all the faces I see.

·         I make people feel better.

·         I laugh with people and NOT at them.

10.   Fitness.

·         I continue to lead a healthy life style.

·         I exercise 5 times a week.

·         I never get full!

·         I eat to live and not live to eat.
